STH 4 - First model

Final project of the SOUTH series

The conclusions described in the previous article led to the development of STH 4, the fourth hull in the SOUTH series. This yacht is characterized by:

  • Increased ballast

  • Longer keel

  • Larger rudder fin

  • Set-back mast

  • Removed bowsprit

  • Widened hull

Beyond these changes, the overall dimensions have remained very similar. The hull can be 3D-printed in two parts on a printer with a build volume of 256x256x256 mm. The mast is awailable in our shop as a three-part unit designed for a 12 mm socket. The remaining components are also available in our store.

Sails can be made from mylar film of different thicknesses, depending on the expected wind conditions. Our basic models are tested with 0.1 mm film. Using 0.05 mm film will improve sail flexibility, but this solution is more delicate and more prone to damage, especially during sail shaping and line threading.

The STH 4 is also equipped with rigging attachment points for shrouds. While they are not a mandatory part of the rigging, they improve mast strength to withstand sailing loads.
